It was a glorious spring day for our Open Eco Rectory Event in Aberfoyle, when Rev Jon Connell kindly opened up his home to showcase the retrofit work that took place there a few years ago. Across the day we had about 20 people visiting to look round and hear about the project from the Fabric Convenor, Christopher Roads. We were also glad to have Stephen McAlaney, from Home Energy Scotland, on hand throughout the day to talk about the support they provided financially for this project, and to discuss ways other similar projects could be supported.
Visitors included members of the Diocesan and Provincial Buildings Committees and Grants Group. We also welcomed priests and congregation members from charges in the St Andrews, Dunkeld & Dunblane Diocese, the Glasgow & Galloway Diocese and the Edinburgh Diocese, as well as some from other denominations. A representative from BRB Ltd, who carried out much of the contractual work, was also there to answer questions and talk through the energy efficiency solutions.
We saw the heat pump, situated next to the bin storage area at the side of the property, and heard how quiet the fan sounded. We glimpsed the solar panels on the roof shining in the sunshine and could see on the indoor monitor the energy being generated. Christopher spoke honestly and openly about the trials and challenges of the project, as well as the huge value in now having the rectory at Net Zero standards.
Thanks to Maggie’s Kitchen – a local bakery and café – and Rev Jon’s endless supply of tea and coffee, guests enjoyed cakes and hot drinks throughout the day.
The day included a tour around St Mary’s church itself, which is situated next to the rectory. The church has one radiant chandelier, and the congregation are kept warm via under-pew radiant heaters. These under-pew heaters are zoned, allowing flexibility in the number of pews being heated at any given time.
Due to this heating system, once St Mary’s has switched to a renewable energy tariff, the building will achieve Net Zero Carbon.

The Net Zero Team are running a webinar on Thursday 3rd April outlining the Provincial Rectory Green Fund. This would be valuable to attend for anyone considering upgrading the energy efficiency of a rectory. The webinar will also be added to the Funding page of the Net Zero Portal after the event.
