Session Six of General Synod opened with Bishop Ian Paton, in his role as Convener of the Provincial Environment Group, introduced a presentation by the Net Zero Team, led by Paul Williams, the Net Zero Delivery Director.
Paul reminded members that the decisions we make now can enable change and define the future of the planet, using the illustration of the growth of world population and the history of technology. The biodiversity crisis was also highlighted, along with the global response.
The activities of the Net Zero Team over the last year were explained, and the invitation was again extended to all to participate in this difficult and ambitious challenge – “to think about what kind of Church you want to be in the future, and to be purposeful and creative in doing that”.
Paul acknowledged that data collection represents a challenge for churches, and stressed that the Net Zero Team is there to help, and a resource to be used. He also reminded Synod of the call of the Provincial Youth delegates on Thursday to take action on climate change, and said that switching to renewable tariffs was a way that charges could respond to that.

The General Synod is a unique and invaluable event in the SEC calendar, bringing together individuals from across the Province. With representatives from every Diocese present, it offers an unparalleled opportunity to listen to the experiences of our clergy.
During this gathering, I learned about the planning challenges faced by a project in Glasgow, the travel difficulties within the Diocese of Moray, Ross, and Caithness, and the funding issues for projects in St Andrews, Dunblane, and Dunkeld. These insights are crucial as they highlight the diverse challenges we face.
It was particularly heartening to witness the strong commitment to decarbonising our churches, despite the daunting nature of this task. This dedication is a testament to the collective resolve to create a sustainable future for our church communities.

The rest of the Net Zero Team were around by their information stand throughout coffee and lunch breaks to connect with synod members.
Synod was a great opportunity to feel the pulse of the Scottish Episcopal Church and to catch up with people. I had some important conversations to help lay plans for Net Zero over the forthcoming year.
