Journeying towards a net zero church

Events: Argyll & The Isles Net Zero Roadshow

The Net Zero Team held the first in a cycle of Diocesan Net Zero Roadshow events in the Diocese of Argyll & The Isles at St John’s Cathedral, Oban on Saturday 24 May 2025. The event brought together representatives from charges across the Diocese, alongside contributors from various organisations for the event.

Contributors included Eco-Congregation Scotland, Faith in Communities, National Churches Trust, Flexel heating solutions, as well as members of the clergy and Provincial Buildings Committee. The day was characterised by inspiring conversations as solutions to Net Zero were pursued.

We were encouraged to hear from the expertise of Peter Burman, member of the Provincial Buildings Committee and Chair of the National Churches Trust Cherish Group. Peter showed his passionate support for the Net Zero work of the SEC, an encouragement to us all.

We would like to thank all our contributors and the staff and volunteers at the Cathedral, in particular the Very Rev Canon Margi Campbell, provost of the Cathedral.

Thanks also to Hope Kitchen, a local social enterprise, who provided a delicious plant-based lunch for our event.

Testimonials from the Oban Roadshow event

The event worked really well and we had good, meaningful conversations.

Very informative on heating solutions, repairs and ongoing maintenance.

The rep from Flexel provided really useful info about their products – and as Oban Cathedral already had Flexel heaters, we could feel how well they worked.

All the presentations were useful and interesting.

Fantastic lunch, and great to use a social enterprise.

Upcoming Diocesan Roadshow events

A roadshow event will take place in each of the seven dioceses across the coming months. These events will bring together charges from across the dioceses to share stories on how they are working towards Net Zero. There will be opportunities for encouraging one another, sharing ideas and challenges.

The Net Zero team will be welcoming external contributors to each event, including environmental organisations, funders, installers and local partners.

Please see below our upcoming dates for the remaining Roadshow events, and please help us by sharing these with anyone you know who might be interested in attending – all are welcome regardless of denomination or faith group.

Registration pages can be found on our Events page. Please register to help us plan catering for lunch.
