Like many Scottish Episcopal Churches, St Magnus’, Lerwick is using liturgy for Creation-tide through September. To aid worship, they are also displaying ‘Threads through Creation’ textile art panels, in the church building. These panels have been created by textile artist Jacqui Parkinson.
Jacqui introduces her work by saying: “My focus is on creating powerful images on a large scale together with fine detail and intimacy through the stitched line. I usually use dyes, vibrant silks, metallic leathers and gold leaf. My Christian faith is the creative trigger in most of my work. I aim to create beautiful panels for everyone’s enjoyment. My work is designed to catch the eye and set you thinking.”
She goes on to says “For thousands of years, people have been inspired by the Creation story. I love it. It’s awe-inspiring yet fun, unimaginable in scope but brought down to a very human scale.” More about Jacqui’s work can be found here.
As well as incorporating creation care into worship, members of the congregation at St Magnus’ are using their voices to speak up for climate justice. Ruth Stock, from St Magnus’ congregation, wrote to local parliamentary candidates ahead of the General Election, asking for their take on fair trade and environmental issues. Ruth says “As citizens we need to keep aware of the actions of our government (whether we voted for them or not) regarding the environment and trade justice, and keep a watch on how our MPs and MSPs vote.”
We are delighted to hear that St Magnus’ church has applied for a Bronze Eco-Congregation Scotland award, and we wish them all the best in achieving this.
